CHARACTER INFO.
✖ Character Name: Jake English.
✖ Canon: MS Paint Adventures: Homestuck, Page 7140.
✖ Character Appearance: Something like this. But if we want to be canon accurate about it, over here.
✖ Character Age: 16.
✖ Pick A Number: 227, 777.
✖ Canon Setting:Let me tell you about Homestuck.
Here is the basic gist of the setting and how the world operates:
The setting and the world of Homestuck itself isn't really defined as to what it is and what kind of Earth it takes place in. We see a map of the world and references to pop culture that readers are familiar with. From what we understand, the setting of Homestuck itself is just like that of our own with a Texas that Dave Strider reside in, actors like Nicolas Cage that John Egbert adores, puppets, cakes, posters, etc, etc. However, there are also futuristic devices and supernatural skills that are seen in the series that are unrealistic, such as robots, AI systems that speak through a pair of glasses, think-typing helmets and so forth. Such abilities like flash stepping, which the Striders possess, are a common sight. It's that kind of world. A copy of ours, just a little cooler.
The main difference between the world Homestuck and the world as we know it is the fact that it is RPG-based. The characters themselves have a means of inventory, a goal to gain experience and eventually become powerful by means of Godtier (which is essentially an immortal, powerful being who can only die a specific way by means of a noble cause) and what not like in a video game. They have class and aspects that coincide with whatever superpower they will possess. Jake's happens to be the Page of Hope, so this entails what role he will be playing in Sburb when his time comes to play it, and gives him a variety of powers coinciding with that particular title.
As mentioned, the world itself is like an RPG game. This means weird shit can happen; weird shit such as a simple game being the basis of the world itself.
When the four main characters decide to play this game together by putting a physical copy of a Beta version into their computers, it triggers the apocalypse to take place. It's the end of the world as we know it and Earth is going to be destroyed by a giant meteor shower. Only those who select to participate in the game can save the world and it is up to them to do just that. They can choose to do so, or be doomed like the rest of the universe. By entering the game, they are taking a stand to play the game and save the world.. in a nushell.
This complicated, real-life, apocalyptic game is called Sburb.
The main goal of Sburb is to reach the Medium and build up to The Seven Gates, eventually reaching the realm of Skaia at its center. Skaia and the Seven Gates are essentially the new world the surviving four players much reach to repopulate the new Earth. In order to reach this new home for a new Earth, going through the Medium will lead them there. The Medium is made up of different planets and each player as a specific planet they start on. Think of it as Level 1 in a game.
The starting point of this journey is each player's individual planet. Each planet has something to do with the player's title and, more importantly, their personality. For example, John Egbert's planet is The Land of Wind and Shade. Since his title is Heir of Breath, there are similarities on his planet that coincide with his title. Same with Jake; his planet is the Land of Mounds and Xenon. Imps, Ogres, and many other opponents must be fought by the players as they build upward to Skaia.
The comic itself is read and sometimes played or viewed through a large complex plot, usually with the audience reading "pesterlogs" of the characters as they communicate through a messenger service on their devices to plot to stop the ultimate boss.
The legend of the game itself goes back to its origins. The game was essentially created by a bizarre, alien race known as Cherubs who have a habit of acting like a virus and anti-virus of sorts towards the game. Cherubs are green colored and resemble a skeleton with lanky bodies, lacking ears, hollowed cheeks, etc. They seem to create games and universes, but also destroy games and universes.
Why?
Because Cherubs are weird, and turn into giant temporal snakes when they do the deed, but that's not really important. You see, they build universes and scrap universes almost as if filtering out the inferior specimens. What is even more important is the fact that when the Cherubs made their first session, they created a new species of aliens called trolls who all favor the astrology symbols of Aries, Gemini, Taurus, and so forth. These trolls have a specific blood color according to their rank known as the hemospectrum, but that is more so expressed in the Alternian session of the game.
Yeah, these are the gray colored, candy-corn horned characters that play a vital role in the series.
The first set of trolls were the Beforus trolls. You have your set of astrology trolls who played their gaming session of Sburb. They were kind loving, gentle trolls. The only problem was that they sucked at Sburb.
They sucked really hard at it.
This caused a phenomenon known as a Scratch to take place which essentially creates a new world similar to the first, giving the new set of players a chance to win. This is what we know as the Alternian session or "nice try, trolls, let's take 2." This created the planet Alternia with the most common set of astrology trolls.
Now— onto Alternia.
Alternian trolls were effected drastically from being Scratched. They had prejudice and violent ways of looking down upon those with a lower blood rank— the highest of the blood colors being closer to royalty and more violent then the lowbloods who were basically peasants. This is the hemospectrum where the higher the blood color the more violent tendencies the troll will have on those lower to them.
It's pretty awful, actually.
Their version of the game was called "Sgrub"— to which the Alternian trolls actually beat much to our surprise. They were about to claim their spoils, but...
They were interrupted by a villain. If it wasn't for Bec Noir who basically cockblocked them from their prize of a new world, they would have had sweet victory. That is a different story for a different day.
In this failure, Earth was then created to play the game.
So now that we know the basics of the setting, where does Jake English come into play?
When the Earth was created by result of the Alternian session, the Beta version of the game was played by John, Dave, Rose and Jade. One thing lead to another, and the same thing happened: Sburb became unbeatable, and the Earth's version of the Scratch took place to give Earth another chance (otherwise known as "nice try, Earth 1— good luck, Earth 2.)
Jake is a player in what I'll call "Earth 2", here. He sort of took Jade's place in this alternate universe to step forward and be one of the players to play the game and ultimately save the world... for real.
✖ Character History: Wiki Page: Jake English.
✖ Character Personality:A really popular misconception of this character is that he is drop dead suave and a heart throbber; he knows exactly what he is doing to those interested in him and takes pride in it. While it is true, for one reason or another, that there appears to be several characters to show an interest in Jake romantically, he really isn't the smoothest talker. In fact, he's rather clumsy and unaware of things— not to mention he can be pretty dense. Jake is rather oblivious to some of the most evident things, having looked over hints Dirk had dropped before concerning him being from the future, or any sort of flirtations by people. In any case, Jake's echeladder has titles such as: One Tomb; Too Many Suitors, Cupid's Crosshair Candy, Sharkbait Heartthrob, Hunk Rumpus Buster and Beau Skylark. It's almost like he should totally be the smooth talker hero, but his personality obviously shows he isn't.
But anyway, it's obvious Jane has sort of a thing for Jake as well, but cowards out on confessing to him and encourages Jake to pursue Dirk instead without even catching a hint at all that Jane has affections for him. This goes back to Jake being dense. Dense, but not completely stupid, either. Jake seems to ask very interesting and profound questions when he first has his conversation with Aranea and she is explaining her planet and the trolls she lives with.
He describes his relationship with Dirk as "bestest bros" and "wouldn't mind exploring the waters" before they start going out. This later becomes more of an experiment which he eventually regrets, and during the whole Trickster fiasco, Dirk dumps Jake because he kept running from his problems in a very cowardly sort of way. Because of this, it's fair to say Jake has a wishy-washy sort of personality, along with getting extremely nervous to face situations emotionally related. He's never certain about one thing or another and just sort of goes with whatever in most cases which opens himself up for being easily manipulated by others and their words.
While romance is an interest of his, his mind is usually elsewhere for the most part. He finds relationships very important, but isn't interested enough in them to actually figure out how to pursue them right. It mainly goes with his co-dependency since he grew up primarily alone.
As mentioned, though, his mind is typically elsewhere. Elsewhere being adventuring or nerding out over comic books or movies. It should also be noted here that he aspires to be an archaeologist and uses most of his time exploring his island, so adventuring is very, very cool to him. He even owns a Tomb Raider belt buckle with matching leg holsters, but alas, his shorts are too long for him to wear them properly. He tries to be cool! Honestly— probably tries a little bit too hard because he refuses to wear the holsters until he gets shorter shorts so it looks right without taking in the fact wearing leg holsters like Lara Croft is a little bit dorky anyway.
If there is one way to get Jake's attention, it's mentioning an adventure or exploring of some kind. He claims he doesn't really have time to even use Wikipedia or use proper grammar/syntax cause he's a busy guy and "has an adventure to get on with", quote. I should also say he has some weird obsession with skulls. He gets attached to strange, materialized things much too easily and can simply obsess over them more than the norm. Skulls, the color blue, movies, comic books, guns, blue ladies and etc are just some of the following things he regularly has his mind on.
Jake is a really big nerd. Rather adorable! But very nerdy. He doesn't really seem to openly brag about his impressive collection of comics or movies, but it's obvious he has a stash since he brings up movies and comics a lot, often referencing them.
It's mentioned he especially likes comic books with spider girls in it or movies with cerulean ladies. What he's fascinated with is rather peculiar due to his eccentric personalty and possibly because he didn't have much social interaction growing up besides those he chats with. He's rather energetic and boisterous and possibly a bit of a "ham" who always seems to be on the go. There really isn't much of an explanation why he's so active, but it's certain that it's sort of difficult to calm him down once he gets riled up. One theory for his energy could be the fact he's used to keeping himself entertained since he has nobody else to communicate with in person. This also could explain why he talks with a very odd mix of words and syntax, some of them made up on his own.
Accompanied with being loud and boisterous, he gets flustered very easily, which can essentially lead to something I'll call here a flip out. It's happened several times in the series that he'll type in all caps and draw words out during these flip outs, or start to get embarrassed and sweaty when discussing a topic that is inappropriate or makes him feel nervous. He can get nervous easily as first seen with several conversations between his friends in the first few pesterlogs with them, and even more so with his interaction with Aranea. He doesn't have much of a filter and has a tendency to yell without really thinking about what he's saying, especially during one of these skittish flip outs.
Jake does try his best to be polite and kind to strangers, especially women, but is very much a ruffian otherwise. You know, being an adventurous hooligan and all of that! In fact, he has enough guts to deck a lady if need be, as demonstrated when he attack Meenah in some of the most recent parts of the story, thinking she was the Condesce. Piggybacking on that statement, Jake really does enjoy brawling, probably more than he ought to. There's nothing like a good session of "fisticuffs", and he can sometimes invite himself into a fight without really meaning to from the start. Something about it is enthralling to him, and he would be the one to start a strife or challenge another first. He'll take up the sword, so to say, and plan to be the Blockbuster action hit movie hero, though he just kind of comes across as a major tool. Either way, Jake doesn't really seem ashamed of who he is and can be called a very free spirited individual.
He's very alert and overly prepared for anything. Like any normal person, he has five computers and fetch module in a puzzle form which means he can inventory as much as can properly fit. Given these thoughts, Jake is a packrat and possibly feels exposed or vulnerable when he doesn't have absolutely everything he needs for something. He even has pieces of his former house in his inventory for nostalgic sake. However, one thing he certainly won't leave his room without would be his two M9 Berettas which were a gift from his grandmother as inheritance. This sort of wanting to be prepared complex that he has must come from always being on high attentive considering his island is very dangerous, and he has a sparring robot partner that is also on the hunt for him when he leaves his room.
Jake is open about his interests to everybody without too much of shame. Whether it be about what he's passionate about, like girls associated with the color blue, or guns, or movies; he really doesn't stop and consider how awkward the conversation is getting, and neither does he really care that much. He can be very apologetic for anything that may seem out of line, especially when addressing a new person. Really, new introductions can be very sophisticated and painfully gentleman-like depending on his mood at the time. He will often apologize in advance, somewhere in the back of his wild mind that he's about to say or do something stupid.
Even with him being oblivious and hard to catch onto things, Jake does have a certain amount of untapped potential being a Page of Hope and all of that. He's had his share of brilliance and shown intelligence in ways he didn't think he subconsciously knew.
All things given, Jake is rather kind if you don't come across as dangerous. He can be insecure when meeting new people, but he's sweet to his friends when he isn't coming off as arrogant (which he hardly notices he actually does). He seems to also get picked on and has a pretty good attitude about it without being too defensive.
The odd thing about Jake is the fact he seems to be co-dependent and needy of others and seems to always want to have attention put on him (typically by him flipping the conversation to himself), but in most recent updates he seems to be sick and tired of the attention and desires to be left alone. This is seen when Aranea offers to heal his mind by seducing him and he instantly tries to push her away, exclaiming he's tired of being "some sort of piece of meat."
It's almost as if, now that he has grown up a little more, he prefers solitude as opposed to too much company. Perhaps he needs an equal balance, or perhaps he just is tired of people crushing on him. Either way, he cares an immense amount about his Alpha friends and would do anything for them.
✖ Character Powers:✓ Skilled Fighter: Jake has a fondness for fighting and beating the crap out of people or things. Because of this, Dirk designed for him a robot companion to wrestle with. Jake has been training this way and is pretty exceptional at fighting, even if he can get his butt kicked now and then. I mean, it kind of wasn't fair— human being versus a robot. Jake sure did learn a lot from battling with Brobot. At least he has the stamina and guts to take people on.
✓ Gunslinger: Guns guns guns. Jake always has twin pistols with him, a reference to Tomb Raider. In top of that, his grandmother owned a gun company and allowed him to inherit all sorts of guns and rifles. Jake knows how to use these things, and he knows how to use them very, very well.
✓ Knowledgeable: —with certain things. Such as guns and weapons, movies, comic books, outdoorsy things like building a campfire and how to basically survive on your own. He knows how to kill and skin animals and the basics of taxidermy.
✓ Hope Powers: We're still not 100% certain what this does, but from what we know is the fact that if Jake believes enough in a splintered or copied player, they'll become more life-like and alive in his presence. Most of the time Jake just kind of half-believes in them and starts talking to himself since he's the only one who can see them until he believes in them 100%. Yeah, it's a weird power he probably won't even use or be able to use in this game, but it's still there. Jake eventually obtains more powers once he reaches Godtier, but that comes later from his canon point.
CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV:
High Seas: April 9th - Consignment Test Drive: Wichita & Jake
First thread is Jake needing to find a ship to be a crew member with and meets a girl who seems to make him flustered.
✖ Third Person POV:His head was splitting— aching. The sky high fall he had taken would have done him in if he hadn't properly put on his trusty skull top. Thank goodness for sharp thinking— Jake was surprised at himself even for figuring that out.
He was having a dream, such a very interesting and detailed dream that felt so real and vivid. Jake was out stone cold, and without a doubt he'd probably suffer from another concussion like he often did when falling from high places.
Yeah, this happened a lot.
"Hey kid—"
Jake smacked his lips, appearing in discomfort as the vague sound of an unfamiliar voice ringed in his ears. Being passed out was as comfortable as he felt like he could be right now. C'mon, mister mysterious guy, give this kid a break. He's just gone through a complicated and time sensitive array of events, and he was in the midst of assisting in yet a another, though he didn't even know that yet.
"You alright? Hey— hey! Wake up!"
That was a nudge in his ribcage.
"Get the hell up!"
Oof! That really, really hurt, and it was enough to jolt Jake out of his dreaming. The teenager groaned in agony and discomfort; something big was about to happen and he could sense it. That intense dream he was having? That was important. It was pertinent he react fast because everything was slowly coming together.
Jake sat up slowly and unsteadily, the mechanics on his skull top still running in full gear even after that fall.
"Honestly, must you be so—" Jake started, but realization soon hit him that he was speaking to another person. Another person whom he didn't recognize, but it was another human being that was standing before him in the flesh. The actual flesh— not this half existing half not existing flesh or this dreamy flesh like he had just previously experienced.
"Holy moley!" Jake exclaimed, instantly taking off his skull top to get a better look at this individual. "How the devilshitting dickens did you get here? Who are you? I haven't had anybody speak to me here.. since forever! And.. why are you so queerly dressed? It's rather spooky attire if you were to ask me."
"Not important. What is important is your help. We desperately need your assistance! The fate of the world as you know it lies in your hands, and only you can save those you care about the most!"
It sounded like a whole bunch of bullshit to Jake, but the second half of that sentence left him concerned. He knew that his world was going to be in peril in the future, and that is what this big game-venture he was about to embark on was all about.. right?
Jake removed his skull top, black and thick hair matted together and pressed against his face. He needed to get a better look at this hooded figure that was speaking to him. He couldn't believe it was actually real— somebody standing before him who wasn't some supernatural ghost or beastly being that inhabited his island. He remained seated.
"It sounds like a bunch of malarkey if you were to ask me. By George, I don't know who you are or what the kringlefucking Christ it is you're wanting."
"I'm wanting to make an arrangement with you— one that will save your Earth and more importantly.. your friends."
Save his friends, you say? His friends were already going to be in danger, but maybe, possibly—
"Are you apart of the adventure I was told about?"
Such an easy, easy way of manipulation. Jake opened the door for that one without a doubt. The figure nodded in agreement.
"Your planet as we speak is the next on the list to be destroyed. We are choosing you to be the hero— the star, if you will— for planet Earth. By agreeing to our missions, you are agreeing to save your Earth and your friends who inhabit it."
"Sounds like a bit of hogswallop if you were ask me," Jake replied in a bit of reluctance. The figure approached him a little closer. They conversed. As dense as Jake was at times, something about his entire arrangement seemed awfully fishy, but in gruesome and urgent detail, he explained what would become of Earth should he not follow out the wishes. He lied, even. He lied about being apart of the adventure he was going to embark on— he lied about the future that Jake knew about. He even lied and told him his friends in the future would be safe and free of the perils they were in.
This was the deal breaker. Jake would do anything to keep his friends safe.
CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team: Green Team! Jake can take initiative when given the extra nudge to do so, and he does love a bit of the action.
✖ Mission Freebie: The life of his grandmother back. The series doesn't give his grandmother any screen time (except maybe one panel?); she is merely mentioned and raised Jake until he was about 5 years old. If this happens to be a problem for some reason, Jake will request his twin 9mm Berettas in their leg holsters instead.
✖ Personal Item or Weapon: His skull-top. This is an armor device that serves as a computer. More than likely it won't be functioning other than providing protection for his head.
✖ Character Inventory:
1x pair of shorts (khaki.)
1x tanktop (black.)
1x set of glasses.
1x green over shirt.
1x pair of combat boots.
Characters from Homestuck usually carry a sylladex, which is a way for the characters to carry an inventory. Jake will not have his sylladex with him.. which probably won't go over so well.
